Fujifilm's digital mammography technology now available for mobile use
| Radiology News - Mammography |
Fujifilm's FCRm is now available for use in mobile mammography environments. The first two installations were in mobile units operated by the Harris County Hospital District in Houston and St. Joseph's Hospital of Atlanta.
Fujifilm Medical Systems USA, Inc.'s computed radiography for mammography (FCRm), the world's most widely used full field digital mammography (FFDM) system, is now available for use in mobile mammography environments. The first two installations of Mobile FCRm systems were in mobile units operated by the Harris County Hospital District in Houston and St. Joseph's Hospital of Atlanta.
"Just as the US adoption of FCRm by traditional breast imaging facilities has been mirroring our worldwide success with record sales, we expect the US mobile mammography market to also mirror our international success with Mobile FCRm," said Andrew Vandergrift, National Marketing Manager, Women's Healthcare Imaging, FUJIFILM Medical Systems USA. "We believe that Fujifilm has the ideal solution to enable mobile mammography providers to readily implement FFDM and broaden the availability of digital mammography."
According to analysts, more than 400 mobile mammography units are in use today throughout the US -- the vast majority with conventional analogue film systems. With only about ten to 15 per cent of existing mobile coaches having converted to digital mammography, the mobile environment lags behind traditional breast imaging facilities. Almost 30 per cent of the fixed mammography sites have transitioned to digital with the anticipation that market penetration will exceed 40 per cent by year's end.
FCRm makes the transition to digital significantly easier and more affordable in mobile environments than other FFDM systems. Aside from being more forgiving in a mobile environment with a more durable imaging plate, Mobile FCRm is generally less sensitive to temperature and humidity changes that may damage electronic detectors.
The Harris County Hospital District has installed Fujifilm's Mobile FCRm in a brand new vehicle, while the mobile coach at St. Joseph's Hospital of Atlanta elected to retrofit their existing coach. Mobile FCRm is particularly well suited for van conversions because it works with the existing x-ray equipment, uses standard 110v power, and does not require special environmental control. And whether converting an existing coach or electing to go with a new one, Mobile FCRm delivers Fujifilm's renowned image quality.
"Digital mammography delivers images that are available for immediate review and with consistent quality, giving mobile technologists the necessary diagnostic information needed to release the patient with confidence," noted Vandergrift. "And when Fujifilm's digital mammography is combined with our Synapse PACS and Synapse Managed Services, users can take comfort in the knowledge that Fujifilm can offer the entire acquisition to archive solution."
The only vendor to offer their own end-to-end digital imaging solution - including FCRm, Synapse PACS and Synapse Managed Services - Fujifilm enables mobile providers to concentrate on the delivery of care while Fujifilm manages the IT infrastructure. By connecting Mobile FCRm to a secure wireless broadband connection, images acquired in the mobile setting will be sent to the user's desired reading location and directly to Fujifilm's state of the art data center with the option of Managed PACS.
Synapse is Web-based and truly scalable so it is configured to meet a user's unique needs. This easy-to-use system provides mobile users with all of the sophisticated image analysis, transfer and storage capabilities that are available to Synapse users in large, multi-hospital settings, but scaled appropriately. And with Synapse Managed Services, users can concentrate on the delivery of radiology services while the IT component is seamlessly handled for them. Fujifilm Managed Services provide a turnkey, high- reliability solution that encompasses software, system management, hosting and disaster recovery customized to any environment.
