GRHS Offers Full Field Digital Mammography
| Radiology News - Mammography |
Women who undergo routine mammograms at Glacial Ridge Health System (GRHS) in Glenwood now have the most up-to-date diagnostic technology available to them – full field digital mammography (FFDM).
GRHS is the first healthcare provider in the area to feature the state-of-the-art system, Selenia digital mammography from Hologic.
Full field digital mammography is different from both conventional film-based mammography and computed radiography in how the image of the breast is acquired and viewed. The radiologist can magnify the images, increase or decrease the contrast and invert the black and white values while reading the images.
These features allow the radiologist to evaluate microcalcifications and focus on areas of concern.
While computed radiography (CR) is an accepted method of performing general digital radiography for applications requiring moderate productivity, resolution, and dose performance, there are limitations, according to GRHS leaders. CR systems do not offer the resolution performance of the state-of-the-art flat panel image receptors used in full field digital mammography (FFDM), they added.
