Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center unveils mobile mammography examination suite built by Oshkosh Specialty Vehicles

Radiology News - Mammography

Oshkosh Specialty Vehicles and Gundersen Lutheran Health System have together unveiled a new mobile digital mammography examination vehicle.

Oshkosh Specialty Vehicles (OSV), an Oshkosh Corporation (NYSE:OSK) company, and Gundersen Lutheran Health System, headquartered in La Crosse, Wis., together unveiled a new mobile digital mammography examination vehicle at the third annual Gundersen Lutheran Medical Foundation Steppin' Out In Pink walk for breast cancer research and awareness.

The 40-ft examination suite will travel across Gundersen Lutheran's service area in Wisconsin, Minnesota and Iowa to provide women with state-of-the-art digital mammography examinations. It includes an advanced GE Senographe™ Essential digital mammography system that was installed by Oshkosh Specialty Vehicles, with assistance from GE engineers who tested and calibrated the equipment prior to delivery.

The Senographe Essential features the largest digital detector in the mammography market, advanced ergonomic design for the technologist, optimized patient comfort and seamless workflow connectivity. The foundation of the Senographe Essential imaging excellence is GE's advanced digital detector, which delivers the industry's highest Detective Quantum Efficiency (DQE) - the standard for quantifying digital X-ray image quality- at low doses.

"Our primary objective is to build quality, mobile diagnostic and treatment vehicles that enable the medical community to more effectively reach out to people in need," said John Slawson, Oshkosh Specialty Vehicles president. "This digital mammography examination suite, which plays a critical role in early breast cancer detection, is a tremendous example of our company’s products in action."

Gundersen Lutheran Health System and its Norma J. Vinger Center for Breast Care are nationally recognized as an interdisciplinary model for early detection, efficient diagnosis, individualized treatment and thorough follow-up care. The mobile digitalization

of mammography provided by the OSV unit allows the Center to further its mission of bringing treatment to those who need it.

"Reaching out to those who are uninsured, underinsured or may otherwise not have access to advanced care is a big part of our mission," said Gayle Jago, Gundersen Lutheran's Norma J. Vinger Center for Breast Care, clinical manager – program development. "This new mobile digital mammography suite will hit the road beginning in October, which is national breast cancer awareness month."

The vehicle incorporates a walk-through modular body built on a Freightliner M2-106 chassis. The vehicle is 40 feet in length and includes features such as:

  • A slide-out section to create a larger and more comfortable interior with 271 square feet of space.
  • A waiting and reception area where patients are welcomed and registered, and can wait their turn comfortably seated.
  • Two changing rooms with one large enough to accommodate a wheelchair, allowing exam time to be optimized by patient flow management.
  • A spacious examination room, specifically designed for the GE Senographe Essential Digital Mammography System and where the operator can easily position the patient.
  • A rear galley area for the medical staff, including a refrigerator and microwave.
