Radiology News - Mammography

Southwestern Vermont Medical Center offering free mammography screening to women without insurance coverage or with high deductibles.

Eileen Druckenmiller, communications specialist for Southwestern Vermont Medical Center, said that the exams are paid for through a grant from the Susan G. Komen for the Cure foundation. She said that there is enough in the grant to give 100 women mammograms, as well as to provide 300 women with information about the exams and breast cancer.

The exams will be available on three dates: Feb. 24 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., March 13 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., and March 23 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Druckenmiller said that if those times or dates don’t work for an individual, another time can be set up. To set up an appointment, anyone interested should call Breast Health Navigator Shannon Tatro at 802-440-4244.

"A mammogram is the best test for finding breast cancer early and SVMC has the most up to date digital mammography equipment," said Druckenmiller. "Digital mammography provides clearer images, which aid in the detection of breast cancer."

She said that women 40 and over should get mammograms, as recommended by the Center for Disease Control and the American College of Radiology. "Early breast cancer often has no noticeable symptoms," said Druckenmiller. "That’s why a screening mammogram is so important to a woman’s health." She added that for women who feel uncomfortable getting a mammogram, the hospital has set up the Women’s Imaging Center, designed for comfort and privacy.
