Thermograms Detects Cancer Earlier than Mammograms

Radiology News - Mammography

Thermograms, can detect breast cancer 10 years before a mammogram can, allowing you to make lifestyle changes to actually prevent the cancer from growing.

Carmen Hamilton said for two years, doctors have been following a lump in her breast. That's why she makes mammograms part of her medical routine. But they aren’t always clear. That’s why she opted for a thermograms.

“I think this is complementary and gives you more information, more direction and complements what the mammograms show," Hamilton said.

Certified Thermographer and registered nurse Ginger Scalone said thermography uses an infrared camera to detect vascular malformation, which is what a cancerous area needs before a density develops.

“Long before you ever have a cancerous area, you have to have blood vessels to feed that area," Scalone said.

And because of how sensitive thermograms are Scalone said they can be used as a preventive tool to stop cancer from growing.

Scalone said thermograms should not be used as an alternative to mammograms. She said while thermography is more sensitive than mammography, a mammogram is much better at detecting slow-growing cancers.
