McKesson announces MVP Health Care, Blue Cross of Idaho among organizations to use evidence-based content for addressing the molecular and genetic tests

McKesson announced that MVP Health Care and Blue Cross of Idaho along with several other large healthcare organizations have licensed InterQual Molecular Diagnostics Criteria to support utilization decisions for molecular and genetic tests.

The use of molecular and genetic testing is growing rapidly, with industry sources forecasting that the market for these tests will approach $8 billion by 2010 and represent a third of all diagnostic testing costs in the next three years. These advanced diagnostics have enormous potential to enable earlier diagnoses of disease and safer, more effective treatments tailored to care plans for patients.

InterQual leads the industry in evidence-based clinical decision support for healthcare utilization management, used by over 4,000 healthcare stakeholders including hospitals, health plans and government agencies. “ McKesson is known for the rigor we use in developing InterQual content for supporting appropriateness of care decisions. With the new molecular diagnostics criteria, we are continuing to leverage our 30 plus years of expertise with the latest evidence in an emerging field,” said Tammie Phillips, vice president of InterQual at McKesson.

Health plans and their network providers can access the criteria via McKesson ’s new Clear Coverage , an automated authorization and coverage determination solution. The solution automates medical necessity reviews to support real-time advanced diagnostic and procedural decisions at the point of care and within the health plan organization. Clear Coverage addresses the clinical, financial and administrative challenges of molecular and genetic testing by combining evidence-based criteria from a trusted source with advanced technology that connects payors, labs and providers and streamlines the coverage determination and authorization process.

InterQual Molecular Diagnostics Criteria are also available in McKesson’s CareEnhance Review Manager workflow software.
