McKesson displays Paragon physician solutions, including CPOE, physician documentation and WebStation for Physicians at the HIMSS 2010
As the provider of hospital-based and family practice care to a significant area of northwest Iowa, Spencer Hospital is dedicated to providing its patient community with the best care possible. As testament to this goal, the 99-bed hospital wanted to provide its care team with the same high-tech capabilities available to larger hospitals across the nation. Spencer Hospital chose McKesson ’s Paragon hospital information system ( HIS ) as the foundation for its information technology solution. The initial implementation of Paragon was completed in 10 months and the hospital followed this success by completing implementation of Paragon’s computerized physician order entry ( CPOE ) in just 70 days.
As part of the Paragon solution, CPOE provides the ability to electronically submit patient care orders for pharmacy, nursing, laboratory, radiology and all other services. Use of CPOE eliminates the possibility of errors related to poor handwriting and the system alerts caregivers to patient allergies or potential adverse drug reactions. Spencer Hospital also expects the addition of CPOE to support its efforts to qualify for financial incentives outlined in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.
With its ease of order entry and faster order processing, the Paragon CPOE system was quickly adopted by physicians piloting the system at Spencer Hospital. Brian Dvorak, M.D., is a family practitioner and the physician champion of the hospital’s CPOE team. When highlighting benefits of Paragon’s CPOE functionality, he noted how its design includes multiple touch points that correlate to the caregivers’ workflows. “This allows us to manage multiple tasks, such as checking labs and other reports, without leaving the CPOE program,” said Dr. Dvorak. “With computer stations in physician exam rooms and inpatient rooms, we can give patients a greater understanding of our decision-making process and involve them more directly in their own care.”
“Spencer Hospital’s success in rapidly implementing CPOE reflects strong support for the project from the leadership team and the implementation team’s intense focus on execution,” said Jim Pesce, president of the Paragon solution suite. “The Paragon HIS already receives high marks from nurses and physicians for its ease of use and patient safety benefits. The quick go-live and positive reception from physicians for our CPOE solution is more proof that we’re designing, developing and delivering solutions that hospital clinicians will adopt and use.”
Continuing this strategy to provide community hospital physicians with information technology that improves efficiency and accuracy, McKesson is currently developing an advanced physician documentation solution for the Paragon HIS. The new solution is expected to help improve clinical productivity and documentation accuracy by streamlining a process historically full of redundancies. Additionally, the solution is designed to incorporate a physician’s normal patient care workflow to make it easy to electronically document care and adopt other physician tools.
An integrated clinical and financial system built on a Microsoft® Windows-based platform, the Paragon HIS has been praised for its total value – low cost of ownership balanced with the ability to help hospitals improve their performance. The solution provides hospitals with a comprehensive EHR that serves as the base for McKesson’s full community hospital solution suite, which includes integrated medical imaging, document imaging and ambulatory EHR solutions. It recently achieved the “Best in KLAS” ranking for Community HIS in the 2009 Top 20 Best in KLAS Awards: Software & Professional Services report for the fourth consecutive year.1
McKesson ’s Paragon physician solutions, including CPOE, physician documentation and WebStation for Physicians, will be on display at the 2010 Health Information Management Systems Society Annual Conference and Exhibition ( HIMSS 10 ) . The conference will be held in Atlanta March 1-4. Visit McKesson at the conference in Booth #7411, Hall B.
