McLaren Health Care Corporation announced that McKesson’s Paragon hospital information system will be deployed in all of its hospitals.

To standardize its health information technology (IT) infrastructure and provide common tools for its medical staff, McLaren Health Care Corporation recently announced that McKesson ’s Paragon hospital information system ( HIS ) will be deployed in all of its hospitals. As one of the nation’s top 25 integrated healthcare systems, the Flint, Michigan-based healthcare provider operates eight facilities serving patients in 29 counties. Two hospitals already use the Paragon solution, including Mount Clemens Regional Medical Center, which deployed the system within a year’s time. The health IT investment supports McLaren’s strategy to qualify for government HITECH incentives outlined in the economic stimulus program.

“Our goal is to deploy a single, high-quality solution across all of our facilities so that caregivers have one system to learn, we can share information across facilities, and we have a simpler software environment to support,” said Don Kooy, chief executive officer of McLaren Regional Medical Center. “Given our rapid time to value at Mount Clemens and the adoption we’ve seen among clinicians, we are confident that McKesson is the right partner and Paragon is the right system to help us reach our long-term goals.”

PHNS, a healthcare IT services company, will manage implementation of the new Paragon systems for McLaren. Physicians and nurses in McLaren hospitals already using the Paragon solution have quickly adopted the easy-to-use system. In a single system, caregivers have access to patient data that is collected electronically in real-time from every location in the hospital, including ancillary services.

“Standardizing on a single clinical and financial solution enables health systems to optimize their implementation and caregiver adoption strategies,” said Jim Pesce, president of McKesson’s Paragon solution suite. “McKesson has proven that hospitals can successfully deploy the Paragon system in a relatively short time period – and that’s important when an organization like McLaren is planning an IT strategy for multiple facilities.”

Built on a Microsoft Windows-based platform, the Paragon HIS offers a combination of low ownership cost coupled with the ability to help hospitals improve their performance. The solution provides hospitals with a comprehensive EHR that serves as the base for McKesson’s full community hospital solution suite, which includes integrated medical imaging, document imaging, and ambulatory EHR solutions. Paragon recently achieved the “Best in KLAS ” ranking for Community HIS in the 2009 Top 20 Best in KLAS Awards: Software & Professional Services report for the fourth consecutive year.
