Medsphere Systems proven open-source EHR will help hospitals meet “meaningful use” criteria

Vangent, Inc., a leading global provider of information management and strategic business process services, announced a strategic partnership with Medsphere Systems Corporation , the leading provider of open-source healthcare enterprise solutions. The partnership will help U.S. healthcare enterprises quickly realize the safety, outcomes, efficiency and economic benefits of a proven electronic health record solution.

OpenVista enables public healthcare facilities to leverage the billions already invested by the federal government in the VA’s proven VistA EHR system in time to meet federal meaningful use guidelines and realize ARRA financial incentives. VistA’s capabilities to automate and improve healthcare for more than five million U.S. veterans have been well-documented over two decades of use at more than a thousand diverse facilities nationwide. More than 13,000 physicians and nearly 55,000 nurses use VistA, plus thousands more who rotate through the VA during clinical training.

“We are very excited to partner with Vangent’s thought leaders and implementation experts to help hospitals increase revenue, decrease operating expenses, improve quality and realize meaningful use,” said Medsphere President and CEO Michael J. Doyle, who also noted that this partnership aligns organizations led by two former federal healthcare leaders:  Kerry Weems is former administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services and now serves as Senior Vice President and General Manager of Vangent’s Health Solutions division; as under secretary for health at the Department of Veterans Affairs, Medsphere’s board chairman, Kenneth W. Kizer, MD, led an agency-wide expansion of VistA.

“Given the pressing need to reduce healthcare costs and keep the U.S. competitive—not to mention keep Medicare alive for future generations,” Doyle added, “perhaps this pertinent and timely partnership will impel public sector healthcare executives to consider a tried and true solution to the ‘trilemma’ of how to improve quality, achieve meaningful use and cut costs.”

“Vangent’s open architecture model enables the integration of interoperable EHR solutions like OpenVista with legacy HIT solutions based on open health standards,” explained Weems. “Our approach to health IT reflects a belief that open systems and sharing of data are critical to achieve better care and control costs.”

Vangent’s Health Information Exchange Open Source makes secure exchange of health information from multiple and disparate system and data sources possible. HIEOS will help promote OpenVista’s interoperability and facilitate connection to the Nationwide Health Information Network (NHIN).

The OpenVista implementation process typically moves an inpatient facility from paper to paperless in six to nine months. Implemented in a pre-populated format that includes clinical templates, best practices and order sets, OpenVista’s highly flexible nature accommodates existing clinical workflows and makes all patient data available at the point of care. And Medsphere’s subscription-based pricing model eliminates up-front costs and back-end balloon payments, making a quality health IT solution available to virtually any hospital, regardless of resources.
