Centro Sononuclear Río Piedras to Offer Positron Emission Mammography (PEM) Scanning From Naviscan in the Fight Against Breast Cancer

Centro Sononuclear Río Piedras announced that it will be the first imaging facility in Puerto Rico to offer Positron Emission Mammography (PEM) in the fight against breast cancer.
Centro Sononuclear Río Piedras announced that it will be the first imaging facility in Puerto Rico to offer Positron Emission Mammography (PEM) in the fight against breast cancer. This installation will provide Centro Sononuclear a greatly increased ability to image and diagnose early-stage breast cancers, positively impacting cancer management. The leading-edge technology provides unprecedented metabolic resolution down to two millimeters. Centro Sononuclear will also offer the new PEM Stereo Navigator capability, providing PET-guided biopsy.
“At Sononuclear, PEM will be a critical tool for surgeons and oncologists, providing the ability to detect early disease, and to provide biopsy guidance for the smallest tumors not detected by conventional imaging,” stated Dr. Jorge Toro Ramirez, Medical Director of Clinical PET at Sononuclear Río Piedras.
The PEM scanner from Naviscan, the leader in molecular breast imaging (MBI), uses PET technology to produce tomographic images that allow physicians to visualize breast tumors the width of a grain of rice. The scanner is the size of a mammography unit and consists of two high-resolution detector heads which are placed in close proximity to the breast. Compared to the higher-force compression necessary for mammography, the PEM scanner uses gentle breast immobilization allowing for greater patient comfort, as well as reducing motion artifact and improving image resolution.
