Interview with Dr Barbara Croft, head of the Cancer Imaging Program at the National Cancer Institute, National Institutes of Health.

National Cancer Institute seeks more investigators to submit applications for funded research

Q: What products, updates or innovations are you announcing or launching at RSNA?

A: The NCI Cancer Imaging Program will be highlighting our initiative for Academic-Industrial Partnerships (PAR-07-214) and the re-issuing of the RFA for the NTROI (Network for Translational Research in Optical Imaging).

Q: What are the benefits of using your product?

A: The National Cancer Institute is the largest funding organization for cancer research in the world. The program personnel can help the applicants become grantees.

Q. What are you hoping to achieve from this year's RSNA?

A: At the 2007 RSNA, we hope to meet yet more investigators who would like to submit applications for funded research. We hope to get the message across that there is funding available for those who can write a good application and are willing to follow the process through to funding. We hope to meet people and make them more comfortable with program staff.

Q: What key messages do you have for RSNA attendees?

A: The Cancer Imaging Program wants to convey that they are ready and willing to help applicants with the process and science of funding for research in all aspects of medical imaging. Please call or contact program staff when you are considering an application for funding for medical research. Staff can acquaint investigators with the active initiatives, with the funding mechanisms, and discuss grantsmanship and application strategies.

Q. How do you see the year ahead in clinical and business terms?

A: The federal budget for FY08 for NIH and NCI funding will be nearly flat. That said, the NCI has nearly $5bn for grant funding, so there is a great opportunity for those who can submit a winning application.
