ONI Medical Systems, Inc.’s Dr. Peter Roemer Receives ISMRM 2009 Gold Medal Award

Company News - ONI Medical Systems, Inc.

ISMRM 2009 Gold Medal Award was presented to ONI Medical Systems Dr. Peter B. Roemer

The International Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine’s (ISMRM) highest individual honor, the prestigious Gold Medal Award, was presented to Peter B. Roemer, Ph.D., ONI Medical Systems, Inc.’s co-founder and Chief Technology Officer, by the organization’s President, Vivian S. Lee, M.D., Ph.D., M.B.A., at the 17th Scientific Meeting and Exhibition in Honolulu, Hawaii. The award is given to individuals for pioneering scientific contributions to Magnetic Resonance in medicine and biology.

Dr. Jeffrey Duerk, Chairman of the 2008-09 ISMRM Awards Committee and immediate Past President of the Society noted, “Dr. Roemer’s Gold Medal recognizes his pioneering contributions to magnetic resonance imaging radiofrequency receiver coil array technology which today represents a fundamental technology found in all modern MR systems. MRI as we know it today, both in terms of imaging speed and image quality would not exist without Dr. Roemer’s contributions to the field.”

Dr. Roemer began his career as a scientist-engineer at General Electric in 1983. While at GE, he was first to develop and put into practice, in the GE MRI product, shielded gradient coils for clinical MRI systems – an innovation that substantially increased imaging accuracy. He was the lead inventor of MRI phased arrays, a technology that enabled faster and more detailed imaging. Today, both shielded gradients and phased arrays are standard technology in MRI systems from all manufacturers. Dr. Roemer holds over 34 industry patents and is a widely published author of journal articles and proceedings. Dr. Roemer was promoted to GE Corporate Research’s Manager of the MRI and Image Guided Therapy Program, where he oversaw the development of high power gradient amplifiers that enabled faster and more complex MRI imaging procedures. He directed the development of the first MRI system dedicated to surgical and interventional procedures, and the GE’s first generation of 3T and 4T MRI systems. These programs increased the breadth and depth of GE’s MRI products. Dr. Roemer then joined Advanced NMR Systems to develop a dedicated breast imaging system and to oversee further development 3T systems.

In 1997, Dr. Roemer co-founded ONI along with colleague, Robert L. Kwolyk. Dr. Roemer received a BS degree in Electrical Engineering and a Ph.D. in Nuclear Engineering, both from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He is a member of the International Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine, the American Physical Society and Sigma Xi.
