PACS Administrators Keeps Image Flow Up-to-date

Radiology News - PACS

What the PACS administrators do is that combine radiology and information technology to keep hospital staff and outside clinics up-to-date on patient images.

With a PACS Systems , every image is digitally archived on computers. Although they may work in radiology or the information technology department, PACS administrators make sure that the images are transferrable within the hospital or healthcare system's electronic medical record system as well as outside clinics.

"Nowadays, the radiologist sees the image within a minute of being taken," explains Paul Norsten, PACS manager for Regions Hospital and HealthPartners. "The radiologists benefit because they're more productive, and the ordering physician is more productive. Theproviding better, faster, quality care for the patient."

"Most of what I do is correct the patient data and make sure it's proper," explains Randy Romereim, a PACS administrator at Woodwinds Health Campus, part of HealthEast Care System. Romereim also works closely with radiologists to make sure their work is flowing smoothly.

PACS administrators may enter the field from radiology or information technology, but these men believe it's best to be familiar with both. A national survey revealed that salaries range from approximately $48,000 to $85,000 in the West North Central Region of the U.S., which includes Minnesota, Wisconsin and the Dakotas.

"As hospitals see the need for it, my guess is they're going to be pulling from people internally who show that interest to train on the job," adds Romereim. " PACS is still really in its infancy, for the most part. Where it can even go is still the question."
