Aspect Magnet Technologies and Mediso Medical Imaging Systems to Collaborate on Integrated positron emission tomography ( PET ) and magnetic resonance imaging ( MRI ).

Aspect Magnet Technologies and Mediso Medical Imaging Systems announced today at the World Molecular Imaging Congress (WMIC) that the companies have begun a collaboration to develop a multi modality system that combines the benefits of positron emission tomography ( PET ) and magnetic resonance imaging ( MRI ).

The two modalities will be integrated into one system, allowing preclinical researchers to capture PET and MRI images without repositioning the animal subject. The system software will enable fast, easy image capturing together with valuable combined modality information.

The new system will be enabled by both Aspect’s proprietary permanent magnet technology that allows the company’s freestanding, compact MRI machine to be sited in any location without conventional external shielding and by Mediso’s sub millimeter-resolution SPECT and PET imaging technology.

“Our MRI systems can sit next to any other type of equipment without special accommodations, so the natural next step is for us to integrate our MRI technology with Mediso’s cutting-edge PET. The results will be much more robust preclinical imaging information available to researchers everyday right in their labs and even behind the animal barrier with a very competitive cost of ownership,” said Uri Rapoport, founder and chief executive officer of Aspect.

“Having access to imaging information is a critical part of preclinical research,” said Istvan Bagamery, founder and managing director of Mediso. “The enhanced images from this new integrated PET - MRI system will help power scientific discovery and will open a new frontier in drug development. We’re pleased that we’ll extend our unique and proprietary PET imaging technology with this exceptional MRI.”

The companies expect the first systems to be available in 2011. The new product will be sold directly by Mediso and through Mediso distributors.
