Planmed Launches a New Mobile CT Scanner for Extremities

Company News - Planmed Oy

Planmed Oy introduces a completely new, mobile CT scanner for orthopedic imaging of the extremities.

Planmed Oy introduces the Planmed Verity, a completely new, mobile CT scanner for orthopedic imaging of the extremities. The Planmed Verity is a low dose imaging system that provides fast and accurate 3D imaging of peripheral skeletal fractures and disorders at the Point-of-Care. The compact device can be easily sited in any existing X-ray room, side-by-side with other imaging systems.

“With Planmed Verity1 we are expanding our product portfolio to a completely new orthopedic imaging market and are excited to be introducing a truly unique product concept. The Planmed Verity enables the doctor to read high resolution 3D images and plan treatment at the Point-of-Care without having to send the patient for a conventional CT ”, says Mr. Vesa Mattila, Vice President of Planmed Oy .

The Planmed Verity is already being used, for example, at Töölö Hospital, Helsinki University Central Hospital and Helsinki Medical Imaging Center. “The system is easy to use and has very good image quality at dose levels close to 2D radiographs,” says Docent Seppo Koskinen, MD, Ph.D.

Thanks to Planmed’s innovation clinicians can now achieve a volumetric 3D image for accurate and fast diagnosis with a substantially lower radiation dose compared to conventional CT imaging. The scan takes only 20 seconds. During the scan, images are acquired using a short X-ray pulse instead of continuous radiation, enabling a low radiation dose.

Its compact form and free-standing gantry provide easy access also for wheelchair patients and allow bedside imaging. For optimum patient comfort the Planmed Verity features an adaptable, soft-surfaced gantry with an extended bore optimized for orthopedic imaging. The gantry and positioning trays are easily adjustable for imaging foot, ankle, knee, hand, wrist or elbow. Furthermore, special gantry movements allow a unique and completely new application, weight-bearing CT imaging.

The Planmed Verity is being premiered at the Radiology Society of North America (RSNA) meeting starting on November 28, 2010 in Chicago. The Planmed Verity will be commercially available in Q2/2011.
