A new monitor, the MS51i2, with a 5MP ISD technology and a 21.3" digital mammography display, touts 15 megasubpixel technology. The paradigm shift is that instead of only concentrating on the pixels themselves as in standard 5 megapixel displays, the MS51i2 goes after the subpixels which make up the pixels in these images, according to study data presented on Sunday at the 2008 meeting of the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA). "You can get a much higher image resolution than what you can get out of a 5 megapixel monitor," reported Kenneth Wade, International Marketing Consultant representing Climb Medical Systems and their partner Totoku Electric Corporation, who presented the technology. (Read the abstract here.) "The monitor gives three times greater resolution than a traditional 5 megapixel screen."

A demonstration of the technology followed comparing the identical mammography view of a standard 5 megapixel image and then the identical subject imaged with the 15 megasubpixel technology. The contrast between the noise, such as spots, is starkly reduced in the 15 megasubpixel technology compared to the traditional 5 megapixel image. "The improvement makes a much clearer image for the doctors to make their diagnosis," Mr. Wade said in an interview with MedicExchange. (Watch the video of the entire interview here.) "we have started to market this technology in Japan. Also, we have had a number of doctors come by to see the technology and they were extremely impressed by it. There is not doubt that the clearer the image, the easier it is for the doctors to make their diagnosis."

Mr. Wade explained that Climb Medical Systems developed the software for manipulating the images, while Totoku developed the megasubpixel technology, and that in collaboration, they together developed the work station—the first work station in the world designed to work with this particular monitor. "Pricing is competitive, it is lower than three times the price of a regular 5 megapixel monitor and is a great value," Mr. Wade told MedicExchange. "Finally, any type of hardware can be used on the system."
