Radiology HSE Launches 'Filmless' X-ray System

HSE Launches 'Filmless' X-ray System

Radiology News - Radiology

The HSE has announced details of an integrated computerised "filmless" x-ray system which will allow secure and rapid movement of patient image data throughout the health service.

The new National Integrated Medical Imaging System (NIMIS), will allow doctors to electronically view their patients' diagnostic images, such and x-rays and CT scans, quickly and easily, according to the HSE, which says this will be a significant step for patient safety.

The ability of health professionals to share patient imaging data will reduce the risk of losing hard-copy medical images and ensure that the patient's information is available rapidly where and when it is needed, at every stage of a patient's journey.

All of a patient's prior and current images will be available electronically and shared among relevant health prpfesisonals in the radiology department, outpatient clinics, hospital wards., Results can also be quickly sent back to the patient's GP if needed.

The HSE says around one-quarter of Irish hospitals have already moved to a "filmless" x-ray system where all images are captured, stored and examined using computers rather than printed film, with software known as ( PACS / RIS ).

The HSE says the new NIMIS system will introduce PACS / RIS into the remainder of Irish hospitals and will enable seamless sharing of patient data between them and the existing PACS / RIS installations through a national image archive.

HSE CEO Prof Brendan Drumm said NIMIS represents an important step towards ensuring the highest patient safety standards across a modern and complex healthcare system.

Prof Brendan Drumm said having a modern radiology service, which includes the filmless records offered by NIMIS will ensure that this process is rapid, safe and effective for patients and health professionals.
