Radiation Health Hazards Feared In Indonesia due to Unauthorised Radiation Machines

Radiology News - Radiology

The Nuclear Energy Regulatory Agency of Indonesia warned that more than one in 10 medical appliances using radiation, such as X-ray and certain scan machines, were unlicensed, with no safety warranty, and even pose health and environmental hazards. Natio Lasman, the agency’s chairman, said to Jakarta Globe that a 2008 inspection of 1,985 hospitals and 5,505 radiation-emitting medical appliances had revealed that as many as 359 had no license, while the licenses of another 259 had expired. Thirty-one hospitals did not have a radiation dosage monitor, while three lacked radiation protection.

He said the un lisensed radioactive-based medical appliances X-ray, CT-scan, radiography and positron emission tomography) that had not been checked to determine their exact condition posed a danger as patients undergoing multiple exposure.

He said the agency would work with local government and the police to combat the problem and also will try to educate the people about it through the agencies' inspectors.
