San Antonio Proclaims “Nuclear and Molecular Imaging Week” During SNM 2011

Medical Conferences News - SNM 2011

Julian Castro, mayor of San Antonio, has issued an official proclamation declaring “Nuclear and Molecular Imaging Week” during SNM 2011 Annual Meeting held June 4-8.

The meeting is one of the world’s largest events focusing exclusively on fulfilling the educational and networking needs of the molecular imaging and therapy community.

SNM’s Annual Meeting will bring together more than 4,000 members of the molecular imaging and nuclear medicine community, including physicians, technologists, scientists, physicists and pharmacists, to learn and share research about advances in the practice of molecular imaging and therapy. More than 150 exhibitors will also be in attendance displaying breakthrough technologies and developments in the field.

Annually, more than 20 million men, women and children undergo safe, noninvasive molecular imaging procedures with state-of-the-art imaging technologies—including positron emission tomography ( PET ) and single photo emission computer tomography ( SPECT ) scans—to “photograph” biological targets or pathways in the body to help diagnose disease and treat disease and evaluate how well treatment is working.

Molecular imaging is at the forefront of “personalized medicine” by providing patient-specific information that allows tailored treatment of disease and is helping to advance the understanding, diagnosis, treatment and follow-up on cancer, cardiovascular disease and neurological disorders to improve the lives of people worldwide.

“Nuclear medicine and molecular imaging affects almost every single individual, even if they don’t know it. If they personally haven’t received a nuclear medicine procedure, it’s almost certain a friend or family member has,” said Dominique Delbeke, MD, PhD, SNM 2010-2011 president. “I thank Mayor Castro for his proclamation and for his recognition of the vital role nuclear medicine and molecular imaging plays in health care.”

The SNM 2011 Annual Meeting will be held June 4-8 at the San Antonio Convention Center in San Antonio, Texas.
