Medical Conferences News - SNM 2011

SNM 2011 Annual Meeting will take place June 4–8, 2011, at the San Antonio Convention, Sports & Entertainment Facilities Center in San Antonio, Texas.

Technologist Plenary Session
Sunday, June 5 from 12:45 - 2:15 pm; Room 007ABCD

"Succeeding in Tough Times – Moving On and Moving Up"
Mr. Andrew Savo
Life-Coach & Giver of Hope
This session is a positive, upbeat message that discusses how we can develop the Winner inside. Create the Slight Edge necessary to differentiate and succeed in a very competitive and challenging work environment. You can Win!

Hal Anger Lectureship and SNM Business Meeting
Monday, June 6 from 8:00 - 9:45 am; Ballroom A

"Progress in Time-of-Flight PET by Fits and Starts"
Joel Karp, PhD
Professor, Department of Radiology
University of Pennsylvania

Hal Anger is credited with suggesting the use of time-of-flight (TOF) in 1966 to localize the activity due to positron annihilation, and several TOF scanners were built in the early 1980’s to demonstrate the feasibility of the approach. However, it was only 5 years ago that commercial TOF PET / CT was introduced, relying on modern scintillators to achieve fast timing without sacrificing other performance factors. Along with a summary of development of TOF PET, this presentation will include discussion of how the benefit of TOF is realized with clinical studies, in particular oncology, and how the improvement in image quality can be measured. Whereas TOF resolution is currently about 550 ps for commercial PET / CT scanners, we can expect advancements in technology to reduce TOF resolution to 300 ps or better with future instruments as new scintillation materials and solid-state photo-sensors are incorporated.

In addition to the Anger Lecture, the SNM Business Meeting will take place featuring Society updates, awards and the induction of the new President.

Plenary Session: The Henry N. Wagner, Jr. Lectureship
Sunday, June 5 from 8:30 - 10:15am; Ballroom A.

"PET and MRI: A match made in heaven, or the odd couple?"
Bruce R. Rosen, MD, PhD
Professor in Radiology
Harvard Medical School

While CT led the way anatomically, PET has been our principal means of molecular imaging, hence their integration was a natural development. Nuclear Magnetic Resonance imaging has also seen steady growth, offering high resolution with increasing physiologic capabilities, though without PET's exquisite sensitivity and diversity. This period of "parallel play" may be ending, as technical solutions to PET / MRI integration are found, and applications taking advantage of their complimentary characteristics identified. This talk will explore the potentials and pitfalls of combined studies using these two distinct nuclear imaging methods.

Annual Highlights Lecture
Wednesday, June 8 from 11:30 am - 1:15 pm; Ballroom A.

Markus Schwaiger, MD (Cardiovascular); Christopher C. Rowe, MD, FRACP (Neuroscience); Steven M. Larson, MD (Oncology); Harvey A. Ziessman, MD (General Nuclear Medicine)

The scientific highlights of the Annual Meeting will be presented in the context of modern molecular medicine. This session will also provide insights into the future directions of molecular imaging, including nuclear medicine.
