ACUSON X300 PE from Siemens Healthcare extends scanning facilities in Wigan

The Intensive Care Unit at Royal Albert Edward Infirmary, part of Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Foundation Trust, is carrying out portable echocardiograms and abdominal and chest ultrasound examinations following the installation of an ACUSON X300T Premium Edition from Siemens Healthcare.

The X300 PE is situated in the hospital's Intensive Care Unit and is being used for chest, abdominal and cardiac ultrasound as well as line placement for vascular procedures.  Previously, a cardiologist or radiologist would need to come to the department to make an early diagnosis, but with the system in place staff are now able to obtain the initial critical information much quicker whilst awaiting a more formal assessment.  This is especially key in emergencies and out-of-hours when access to these services is limited.

The Intensive Care Unit has also purchased a cardiac imaging package and with the addition of a curvilinear transducer, staff are able obtain more detailed 2D images of the heart for use in echocardiography.  An additional probe has also been purchased to perform transoesophageal echocardiography (TOE).

"The image quality of the X300 PE is very high.  We are able to view extremely detailed images of the heart and other structures and gather more information to help with a confident diagnosis," said Dr. Sayeed Ahmed, Consultant in Anaesthesia and Intensive Care at Royal Albert Edward Infirmary.  "We have remained in close touch with Siemens during training and have a very good working
relationship."

"We are delighted that the X300 PE is enabling the Intensive Care Unit at Royal Albert Edward Infirmary to carry out abdominal and cardiac echo ultrasound examinations for the first time," said Bernadette Leonard, Regional Sales Manager for Ultrasound Products at Siemens Healthcare.  "Theimage quality powered by the transducers will allow clinicians to carry out much more detailed examinations plus offer a quicker and more confident diagnosis."
