East Kent Hospitals Modernises its CT Service with State-of-the-art Siemens Installations

Company News - Siemens Healthcare

Two SOMATOM Definition Flash CT systems provide faster, low dose imaging

Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother Hospital in Margate and The William Harvey Hospital in Ashford, both part of East Kent Hospitals University NHS Foundation Trust, have each installed Siemens Healthcare 's flash speed, low dose CT system, the SOMATOM Definition Flash.

The new generation Dual Source CT systems are playing a major role in the continuing modernisation of patient services at the Trust carrying out general scanning plus improved vascular imaging including cardiac work.  For the first time, stroke perfusion scans are available to assess blood flow in the brain in order to prescribe the most appropriate course of treatment to emergency patients.  Faster scanning speeds of 430 mm/s and a temporal resolution of 75ms are highly beneficial.

"By installing these state-of-the-art CT systems we can meet our general scanning needs at a faster pace and the image quality has surpassed our expectations," said Ruth Moore, Clinical Manager for CT at East Kent Hospitals University NHS Foundation Trust.  "Importantly, these installations make us future proof, ensuring that our hospitals are modern to provide the latest patient care.  This technology also makes it motivating for staff, which is vital for retention and attracting new members of the team."

"We are always looking at new ways in which we can provide the best possible patient care and these new CT systems have given us an opportunity to explore more options and develop our offerings," said Dr. Kashif Naeem, CT Modality Lead at East Kent Hospitals University NHS Foundation Trust.  "Now, not only can we conduct stroke perfusion scans but the faster scanning speeds have enabled us to increase patient throughput and streamline our workflow."

"The Definition Flash is improving the care patients in East Kent receive by delivering a wide scope of scanning requirements with faster speed and lower dose," said Clive West, Regional Sales and Corporate Business Manager at Siemens Healthcare .  "Its versatile and easy-to-use design has enabled the Trust to begin experiencing the benefits straight away and we are delighted to see the major impact it is already having on service provision."
