Siemens Healthcare 's flexible Ysio wi-D increases x-ray capacity and reduces strain for radiographers

The A&E department at the Princess of Wales Hospital, Bridgend, part of the Abertwae Bro Morgannwg (ABM) University Health Board, is now benefiting from increased x-ray capacity and enhanced image quality following the installation of an Ysio wi-D direct Digital Radiography (DR) system from Siemens Healthcare.

The Ysio wi-D has replaced a Computed Radiography (CR) system in one of the hospital’s casualty rooms and is being used for assessments on patients who have suffered major trauma injuries.  The system delivers image previews less than five seconds after exposure to help speed up examinations and increase patient throughput at the hospital.

Featuring a wireless detector that can be used in bucky, on the table and stand, or can be placed underneath or next to the patient, Siemens Ysio wi-D is light, flexible and easy to manoeuvre.  The installation of the system has also enabled the hospital to perform certain examinations at a much reduced radiation dose.

“The Ysio offers greater flexibility than a typical CR system and is able to provide images much quicker than our previous system, which could take two to three minutes,” said Martyn Floyd, Radiographer at the Princess of Wales Hospital.  “We have found it very easy-to-use and its motorised movements have also meant there is much less repetitive strain injury for the radiographers.”

“The wireless flexibility of the Ysio wi-D makes it ideally suited to treating the wide variety of injuries encountered in an emergency department,” said Darren Parker, Regional Sales Manager at Siemens Healthcare.  “The system is able to obtain images instantly, saving vital time for radiographers who can make quicker decisions and ensure that patients who are severely injured can receive swift treatment planning upon return to A&E.”
