Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust Goes 'off piste' with Mammography Strategy

Company News - Siemens Healthcare

Collaboration with Siemens Healthcare heralded a success ahead of national screening age range extension

Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust has successfully achieved a revamp of its mammography strategy opting for Siemens Healthcare 's syngoR MammoReport workstations linking directly with the Local Service Provider's (LSP) PACs system and breaking from the norm prescribed by its LSP.

The upgrade has been completed ahead of the 2012 national screening age range extension and integrates five MAMMOMAT InspirationT Full Field Digital mammography systems, from Siemens Healthcare , and provides successful integration into RIS , PACS and National Breast Screening Service (NBSS) programme through the Inspiration and MammoReport products.

"We decided to go off piste with the Siemens MammoReport Workstations, which has integrated beautifully at desktop level with both CRIS and NBSS.  Images from the mammography systems, including from the trailer, are sent to an image server at the Mermaid Centre before being pushed onto the PACS store and the MammoReport workstations.  Here the images are cached for rapid image review and reporting," said Dr Nick Hollings, Consultant Radiologist at Royal Cornwall Hospital.  "This was a collaborative piece of work between the Trust, Siemens, CSC, HSS, GE and NBSS.  The whole process just goes to show what can be achieved by good team work, even when not necessarily choosing a product provided by the LSP."

"We are delighted by the success of the digital mammography project at Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust, which truly demonstrates how flexibility and collaboration can achieve excellent results," said Lynn Blackburn, Special Products Manager at Siemens Healthcare.  "This is a case example of where everything a radiologist needs to fulfil the role such as diagnostic images, reports and patient histories, is brought together for better teamwork, greater efficiencies and improved healthcare outcomes."

Throughout October and in support of international breast cancer awareness month, Siemens healthcare is promoting the public's understanding of the condition and launching an online initiative.  Uploaded portrait photographs will be collected to create a virtual pink ribbon to tie around the world as a symbol of solidarity. Siemens also plans to donate 50,000 Euros to the non-profit Susan G. Komen organisation involved in worldwide initiatives to fight breast cancer.  For more information visit www.siemens/pink.
