About ASTRO

ASTRO was founded in the year 1958, November 18. It is one of the largest radiation oncology society in the world, with more than 10,000 members who specialize in treating patients with radiation therapies. It also focuses on rearing alliance between radiation oncologists and the larger medical community. It works to establish connection between members and medical oncologists, surgeons, urologists, gynecologists, internists, family practitioners and other healthcare professionals to ensure that patients are offered the most up-to-date treatments available.
At ASTRO's 50th Annual Meeting in Boston in September 2008, the membership took a vote and decided to change ASTRO's name to the "American Society for Radiation Oncology" while keeping the acronym ASTRO. It was decided that the term "therapeutic radiology" was outdated and confusing and that the new name would better reflect the specialty. The new name took effect in January 2009.
