TomTec Imaging Systems GmbH, the Munich/Germany based worldwide leader of 2D, 3D and 4D medical imaging technologies is celebrating its 20th anniversary.

The company was founded on May 31, 1990 by Peter Klein. His vision was to revolutionize the world of cardiac ultrasound by developing the first 3D echocardiography system capable of being able to acquire, display and quantify the beating heart. Frank Schlau, TomTec’s current Chief Marketing Officer and Bernhard Mumm, now President of the company joined the staff of employees a couple of months later. The first product was presented at the American Heart Association ( AHA ) meeting just one year later – in 1991.

“Since then, TomTec has pioneered the world of 3D echocardiography, TomTec’s 4D analysis software is a standard in many ultrasound systems ” says Bernhard Mumm. Through the acquisition of Individual Software in 2001, TomTec also holds a leading role in the field of Stress- Echocardiography and has established its position in the field of Image Management and Cardio PACS solutions. Today TomTec collaborates with many of the leading companies in this field and has again shown its expertise in the field of Cardiology.

In addition to TomTec’s leading role in Cardiology, there have been many innovative products developed that address OB/GYN and radiology as well. Indeed TomTec developed the world’s first 3D fetal ultrasound reconstructions and it is amazing to see how this has become a standard in today’s routine workflow says Frank Schlau. Radiology is another focus in our product strategy and is consistent with our “one step ahead” philosophy as we plan for future products.

TomTec has continued to develop a very strong reputation as “the innovator” in ultrasound through close research collaborations with many universities and researchers around the world. Many ultrasound manufacturers and PACS providers have been working closely with TomTec on integrated applications to provide customer driven workflow solutions.
