Kona Community Hospital (KCH) recently received a new state-of-the-art portable ultrasound machine for the Emergency Department through funding provided by a generous donor.

“This machine will enable us to perform procedures in the Emergency Department without having to move the patient to another room or department,” said Richard McDowell, MD., KCH’s Chief of Emergency Medicine. “It provides a level of convenience for the patient, as well as a faster and improved way for the medical staff to diagnose the patient’s condition. At KCH, we are always striving to provide better patient care.”

The Sono-Site M-Turbo ultrasound machine was chosen for its cutting edge technology, diverse clinical applications and variety of settings.

This versatile system can provide images of the abdomen, nerve, vascular, cardiac and more. The M-Turbo has 16 times the processing power compared to its predecessor and still weighs under seven pounds. It has been drop-tested from three feet, boots in seconds, is sealed/fluid-resistant interface for thorough disinfection, and is easy to use.

It is engineered to give radically better image quality with sharp contrast resolution and clear tissue delineation. It provides better visualize detail, which improves the ability to differentiate structures, vessels and pathology. Due to this, diagnosis is more efficient.

KCH’s Chief Executive Officer Earl Greenia said, “We continue to acquire new technologies, enhance service and quality and improve the physical plant. And, we will continue to explore those opportunities that allow us to provide excellent patient care to our community.”

The Emergency Department has more than 18,000 visits per year. The ultrasound machine will be housed there but will be available to other departments if necessary.

“We know that medical equipment is important in the delivery of care,” said Jim Higgins, president of the Kona Hospital Foundation. “We are very appreciative of the supportive donor that helped us acquire the ultrasound machine.”
