New Ultrasound at La Ronge Health Centre

Radiology News

The Mamawetan Churchill River Health Region is pleased to announce that the La Ronge Health Centre has new ultrasound equipment, thanks to the generosity of many donors.

The health region began fundraising in 2006 to replace ultrasound equipment that had been in use since 2000. Golf tournaments were held in 2007 and 2008, and in June, 2009, the La Ronge Elks #554 partnered with the Missinipi Broadcasting Corporation and Rawlco Radio to host an “Ultrasoundoff Radiothon”. All the many donations to these events made it possible to make the purchase.

“The new equipment is state-of-the-art,” said Andrew McLetchie, Director of Integrated Health Services for the health region. “The images are much clearer, it has 3-D capability, and will be compatible with the new provincial Radiology Information System/ Picture Archiving Communication System (RIS/PACS) that will be implemented in the near future.”

The health region performs over 1000 ultrasound scans each year. Ultrasound is an integral part of the diagnostic process. Ultrasound imaging, also called ultrasound scanning or sonography, involves exposing part of the body to high-frequency sound waves to produce pictures of the bodies tissue and organs. Ultrasound imaging is a non-invasive medical test that helps physicians diagnose medical conditions and plays an important role in the care of every pregnant woman.

“The many contributions from within the health region and beyond are greatly appreciated,” said Joe Hordyski, Chairperson of the Mamawetan Churchill River Regional Health Authority, at an event to officially unveil the equipment on January 14, 2010. “It’s another example of the community working together in wellness for the benefit of many.”

In addition to the La Ronge area, clients from communities such as Wollaston Lake, Southend, Pinehouse and Stanley Mission come to the La Ronge Health Centre for ultrasound exams.
