David O’Connell, Executive Director of Mother of Life Center, has announced that, the Center will celebrate its 2nd portable ultrasound machine within a year on Monday, May3rd, 2010.

The director also said that, the ceremony will come on the first anniversary of the death of Melina Rose Kinnair, a year-old infant who drowned.Melina’s death inspired her cousin Elizabeth Leclair to do something to honor her memory.

Leclair insisted on the purchase of an ultrasound machine after learning that the national headquarters of the Knights of Columbus was offering matching grants. Spurred by the offer and the appeal, K of C councils across Rhode Island held ham and bean dinners, clam cake suppers and other events, and raised  $18,000 that, with the matching grants, was enough to purchase two machines, one each for Mothers of Life Centers on Atwells Avenue in Providence and in Westerly.

The dedication on Monday, will be headed by the Rev. Raymond Suriani, pastor of St. Pius X Church.
O’Connell said he believes the ultrasounds are effective. “Of 31 women who were contemplating abortion who looked at the images on the machines,” he said, “30 decided to bring their babies to term.”
