Ultrasound Sulcus Measurement: Accurate Sizing for Implantable Lens

Radiology News

A nomogram using ultrasound sulcus measurement offers accurate sizing for implantable lens, proved safe and effective for sizing the Visian ICL , a speaker said.

"A high-frequency [ ultrasound biomicroscopy sulcus measurement ] should be the standard of care for posterior chamber phakic lenses," Paul J. Dougherty, MD, said at the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery meeting.

Data from the FDA study using white-to-white sizing showed a 17% rate of poor sizing, with either over- or under-vaulting.

Lenses that are too long can result in angle closure. Shallow vault can result in lenticular cataract formation. Ideal vault is about 500 ?m. Inadequate vault is less than 90 µm. Excessive vault is more than 1,000 µm, Dr. Dougherty said.

The prospective multicenter trial included 61 eyes of 61 patients aged 21 to 45 years with average myopia of about –7.6 D.
