California Cancer Specialists Medical Group, Inc. executes strategic vendor agreement with Varian Medical Systems , Inc. following its clinical evaluation of the RapidArc Radiotherapy technology.

California Cancer Specialists Medical Group, Inc. announced that it has found clinical benefit in Varian's RapidArc Radiotherapy technology. California Cancer Specialists installed the new technology in its South Pasadena Cancer Center; the first of its free-standing multi-specialty cancer centers in the Los Angeles region.

"We were certain RapidArc would provide a more comfortable experience for our patients", said Vincent Jensen, Chief Operating Officer. "Nonetheless, we wanted to explore the technology to understand what clinical benefits it would provide and how it might improve treatment outcomes," he added.

Since the installation of the RapidArc(TM) system, California Cancer Specialist physicians have adopted it as a standard for the treatment of many cancers. "Not only does the technology reduce treatment times to under two minutes, but RapidArc has been able to deliver plans that could not be achieved through multi-field IMRT plans," said Dr. Helen Chen, Medical Director of Radiation Oncology. "Most recently, we were able to effectively treat a patient with progressive metastatic mesothelioma who was no longer responding to chemotherapy. RapidArc was able to treat the bulky left flank/left abdomen mass while still sparing the kidney. A comparable plan could not be achieved with IMRT", she added.

California Cancer Specialists is among the first in the Los Angeles region to adopt RapidArc technology. The parties recently entered into a strategic vendor agreement whereby Varian technology will be used in California Cancer Specialist Medical Group centers throughout the region.
