eProtex to launch Network Medical Device Security Solutions at HIMSS10

eProtex, the nation’s first medical device network security company, will publically launch its new solutions at the 2010 Annual Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society ( HIMSS10 ) Conference & Exhibition, March 1-4, 2010, in Atlanta, Ga. eProtex solutions help healthcare providers safeguard medical devices against electronic threats and ensure compliance with HIPAA Security Rule and the HITECH Act.

“Hospitals have an affirmative duty to document network medical devices and maintain on-going information about those devices. However, most healthcare providers are not in compliance with these requirements, not due to negligence, but simply because of lack of awareness and other pressing issues,” Earl Reber, executive director of eProtex.

With the number of HIPAA cases increasing, the potential cost to healthcare providers could be overwhelming with fines from both federal and state authorities that can cost up to $1.5 million per standard. Yet HIPAA fines are not the only concern. According to a Ponemon Institute study, 80 percent of healthcare organizations have experienced at least one data breach, which can leave healthcare providers prone to civil suits, disrupted patient care and tarnished reputations. Moreover, losing access to mission-critical medical devices causes organizations to divert patients to competing facilities, resulting in lost revenue and frustrations for patients and clinicians.

Launched in July 2009 as a healthcare IT startup, eProtex will make its HIMSS debut at booth #8667 to educate healthcare IT professionals about the risks inherent in medical device networks and offer mitigation recommendations. Nearly 30,000 healthcare industry professionals are expected to attend one of the world’s largest healthcare IT and management systems events to discuss cutting-edge technology solutions designed to improve patient care.
